Plan for vertical density
Its great to know that Vertical density has a role to play in making NYC a green city.  With the increase of the Vertical density, the need for safety also increases.  We need to consider the lessons that we learnt from the 9/11 or Katrina or just recently the Sandy superstorm.  The density of people that get affected also increases. The economy gets a hit. Sustainability of the Dense city has to be planned for....

Re: New York's efficiencies
American culture is also at odds with crowded living. The goal is to have more space in addition to improving the quality of space. We may have to start giving ourselves different messages as population density increases.

Re: New York's efficiencies
I agree, NY is becoming on a good model for future cities. However, on this particular case, basing that the city can stack more people in less space, I don't agree that it's something humanly efficient. Yes, it works for apples and even those japanese watermelons that are cubical for it. But not for humans.

Re: Vertical = Green
It's funny, I was actually a little caught off guard to hear Carol say that NYC is the greenest city, but when you think of it that way -- in terms of how much space we conserve, and the efficiency of our transportation system (in comparison to other transport systems in the US) it makes sense. I'm sure some would be eager to disagree, though.

Vertical = Green
Pack people so close together that there's no space for cars + provide adequate public transport and you get a greener city... I can see city planners tearing up the rule books on height restrictions.

New York's efficiencies
Thank you for this informative video blog, Carol. I am surprised to hear New York cited as a city of resource efficiency. But then again, it makes sense, given New York's overall wealth. Increasingly, New York is becoming a good model for future city directions.
