Mary Jander That planned community looks great, James! I'm glad to see the use of solar energy so prominent.
James@SanDiego Mary, I go ga ga over green eco friendly buildings and such. Visit this link for a planned green community in San Felipe Mexico: http://ranchocostaverde.com/
Mary Jander Interesting question about who is most resistant, Rich. I think there may not be as much resistance as lack of ability to put a dollars and cents figure on the benefits of green buildings. That is...
richheap Over the last five years, I think a clear business case has been made for developers to build environmentally-friendly buildings. Tenants like them as they can save money on energy bills and shout...
CitySolver I heard a radio show on BBC Radio last week about this exact topic. The datacentre the reporter visited was using thousands of pounds each day just to keep the datacentres cool, madness. I think...

Mark Simmons Standards are fine as long as they are not prescriptive – If performance minimums are set as guidelines its then up to the industry and designers to reach those targets. The Sustainable Sites...
Mark Simmons City Solver – Agreed - green roof systems can be too complicated (and thus expensive) – we are working on developing a system which eliminate redundancies (and cheaper too)...
kq4ym It would seem correct that there needs to be standards set for green roofing. But, I suspect that different areas of the country would need differing standards due to climate differences, and construction...
CitySolver I agree completely Mark, Green roofs can be so much better than sedum, and though sedum is ok as you allude, its not great. Far better to have a resilient system that really acts as a full ecosystem...
Hazel I agree with Shane. I'm certain that mixed-use projects are the future and we're slowly moving towards that. I feel that things might be rocky at first as we learn and feel out how to go about it....
richheap Certainly people should be made aware of how they can improve, and I think most would welcome that advice. If people are doing this stuff haphazardly and making mistakes then those lessons could...
Mark Simmons Yes - the original article and other articles that it spawned unfairly and provocatively used "fail" in their title. And you are correct we shouldn't indulge in criticizing failures too much,...
richheap Thanks for an interesting piece, Mark. I suppose there's a careful balancing act needed here as you don't want to be too harsh in your criticism of those who actually have implemented green roofs....
Mary Jander This is good news, @Toby. I do think that even though planners want green buildings, though, there is some resistance in the trenches, due to a lack of information that hinders budget allocations....
Mark Simmons Yes - thinking regionally about plant selection is the same for green roofs as for landscapes. And actually interestingly enough some of the oldest green roofs in the world are grass sod roofs...
Toby @Mary: In the UK the architects and planners have been long set down this road, in both large and small cities and increasingly out in the surburbs by a set of directives from the EU and also by...
