Mark Simmons City Solver – Agreed - green roof systems can be too complicated (and thus expensive) – we are working on developing a system which eliminate redundancies (and cheaper too)...

CitySolver I agree completely Mark, Green roofs can be so much better than sedum, and though sedum is ok as you allude, its not great. Far better to have a resilient system that really acts as a full ecosystem...

richheap Thanks for an interesting piece, Mark. I suppose there's a careful balancing act needed here as you don't want to be too harsh in your criticism of those who actually have implemented green roofs....
Mark Simmons Yes - thinking regionally about plant selection is the same for green roofs as for landscapes. And actually interestingly enough some of the oldest green roofs in the world are grass sod roofs...

Davedgreat2000 Thats actually a photo of Downtown Burbank CA. taken from the 16 floor of the Holiday Inn Hotel. I never realised how many trees my city actually had until i took this photo.
Davedgreat2000 Great article, I think the Greening of our Roofs should be and has to be done via the regions we live in. Planting grass on your roof may not work in the colder climates, it may not work in the desert...
