SAN FRANCISCO -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced a joint effort with Intel Corporation to create a proof of concept for IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network functions based on Motorola's AdvancedTCA(R) Avantellis(TM) communications server.

This joint effort is expected to stimulate IMS application development, enabling telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) and their service provider customers to deliver new and differentiated multimedia communication services over converged networks faster, more cost effectively and with greater scalability and flexibility than with proprietary technologies. Using open, standards-based communications servers as the foundation for IMS network elements will help accelerate the deployment of the infrastructure to realize Motorola's vision of seamless mobility.

The IMS communications server proof of concept will showcase a pre- integrated Open Application-Enabling Platform from Motorola, including AdvancedTCA blades with Dual Low Voltage Intel(R) Xeon(TM) processors and Intel(R) IXP2850 network processors, Carrier Grade Linux and Motorola's NetPlane(R) high service availability software, validated with IMS software from independent vendors.

The proof of concept will be shown in Intel Modular Communications Platform Solution Centers around the world and will be available for TEMs to evaluate the communications server approach and the standards-based technologies it incorporates. Motorola and the ecosystem participants will incorporate customer and market feedback on the proof-of-concept into its future product planning activities.

"Having two of the industry's top players working together to endorse specific network capabilities will help facilitate the adoption of targeted IMS-based applications by carriers," said Rob Rich, Executive Vice President, Yankee Group, a leading industry analyst firm. "That this proof of concept is based on AdvancedTCA and Carrier Grade Linux reinforces the fact that open industry standards have become the widely-accepted future of telecom infrastructure. The more closely the communications computing ecosystem works together, the sooner TEMs and carriers will be able to realize the full value of open industry standards such as AdvancedTCA."

"Both Motorola and Intel have been working towards enabling an open, standards-based solution such as AdvancedTCA," said Doug Davis, vice president, Intel's Communications Infrastructure Group. "By using Intel building blocks, Motorola will be able to provide its customers the ability to deliver new services using IMS more quickly."

"This proof of concept is the industry's first example of a communications server focused on a specific emerging application area," said Wendy Vittori, corporate vice president and general manager, Embedded Communications Computing, Motorola. "The cooperation between industry-leading companies and other ecosystem participants accelerates our customers' evaluation of new technologies to meet new business needs."

Today, Motorola also announced that it has become a Premier member of the Intel(R) Communications Alliance. The Intel Communications Alliance is a community of communications and embedded developers and solution providers committed to the development of modular, standards-based solutions based on Intel technologies. Previously, Motorola was an Associate member.

"Motorola's move to participate in the Intel Communications Alliance at the highest level strengthens our relationship," said Davis. "We are looking forward to collaborating on more ways to help TEMs deliver value-added applications to the market more quickly and easily."

"Motorola believes that AdvancedTCA will play a central role in communications infrastructure in several industries," said Vittori. "As one of several ecosystem-nurturing programs, the Intel Communications Alliance covers an important segment of the industry ecosystem for AdvancedTCA."
