Another CXO
I am not sure whether all the cities might need to have a CDO. But as @Davedgreat mentioned, let us take it case by case or city by city and assess whether do we really need a CDO.

Nicole, I will also be eagerly waiting for your piece about the roles and responsibilities of another CXO.

Re: Chief Data Scientists
@Daved: I do think you're right: We will probably see this play out on a case by case basis. There is no set answer or strategy; it's a process we're seeing.

Re: Chief Data Scientists
Davedgreat: It might help to read Mary's recent blog post on Singapore's hiring of a data scientist. However, stay tuned as well, because we will be putting up a piece soon that discusses roles like CDO and others.

Re: Chief Data Scientists
I don't have any answers to your question about the redundancy of the CTO, @Nicole, but I am certain that the role will be changing given the advent of CDO and similar top-level executive positions.

I think it's worthwhile to backtrack a bit to discover just what the CTO position brought to the organization relative to the CIO. I think we'll find many of the tasks that now fall to the CDO or similar person.

It's worth following this closely.

Re: Chief Data Scientists
@Nicole and Mary,

I think its going to be a case by case basis per company or per city. I have no idea what a chief data scientist actually does. Is it the smae as CIO or CTO? Not sure what role he/she will have in a company or a city.

Re: Chief Data Scientists
I concur with you here that a CDO is different than a CIO. Whether or not the CDO reports to the CIO may be a different debate. But Davedgreat's comment has me wondering... is the role of CTO still needed? Or have various roles like Chief Information Officer, Chief Innovation Officer, and CDO rendered it obsolete?

Re: Chief Data Scientists
I tend to think the person is more of an executive than a techie, yes; but they have to be knowledgeable about choosing technologies to support projects, able to manage projects, and able to impart or sell the importance of various techs to the organization.

Re: Chief Data Scientists
@mary, I agree with you on that point, but really another title whose person it is attached to to do what exactly? The same thing the CTO or CIO has been doing?

Maybe the Chief Data Scientist is a title given to the engineer who is neither a worker bee, nor an engineering manager but someone in between?
