Architecture. Urban planning. IT. Energy. Local government. These are a handful of the major fields of work that are shaping our future cities. And, historically, they've been male-dominated.
But in this first truly urban age, more women are moving to the forefront of city building and are changing the way we come to understand our urban environments and the needs of those who occupy them. We're witnessing a leveling of the playing field, which is great for gender equality's sake, but it's also great for the future of our cities to benefit from what women are reputed to bring to the table as leaders, such as a sense of empathy and a great capacity for risk-taking.
"Women are not only smart and strategic, but they have access to their connective and intuitive power," said Helene Lerner, founder and CEO of Creative Expansions and author of In Her Power: Reclaiming Your Authentic Self. "Many women leaders I know are concerned with sustainability and look to find solutions in creative, innovative ways."
Thus we're proud to call out this list of 25 Women Who Are Shaping Future Cities. (To be fair, we're cheating a bit here: As you'll see below, there are actually a few more than 25 leading ladies on our list.) We've combed the globe to come up with a list of female leaders who are making the biggest difference to the future of our cities; and we've named them, in no particular order, below.
So please take a click through, and be sure to let us know if you agree or disagree with our choices, as well as who we've missed.
Re: Women are multi-tasking @ Anum: Women are genetically born like that. There have been many papers, blogs, articles, debates over such a well discussed topic. Womens brain can process data that is fed into her system much efficiently than their counterparts. Womens brain can handle situations very efficiently in crisis like situations.
Women can take care of an entire family of she has the freedom to take decisions. Its been said in my part of the world where I live in. You educate a MAN and you educate 1 person in this world; You educate a WOMAN and you educate a FAMILY !
Women are multi-tasking Firstly a big applaud for these 25 women as well for dozens of women out there striving to make a change. It has been proven by many surveys that women have the ability to perform different tasks at the same time whereas men fail to do so. A women can at the same time talk on phone, work on laptop as well as take care of things around her.
Re: Information If you can take care and raise nine kids and be the CEO of a company... then you have my full respect until the end of time! I know a lot of women who quit their jobs when they have kids because they "can't manage it" or "don't have time anymore." This just goes to show that if you put your heart and mind into it, you can achieve and take on anything!
Re: Information John: Great feedback! I hadn't heard of the 30% Club but it's certainly relevant to this discussion. Helena Morrissey absolutely sounds like she belongs on our list. Thanks so much for telling us about her and her work.
