BALTIMORE – NFOEC – Spirent Communications(TM) today announced the first shipment of its Very Short Reach (VSR) interface for the Adtech AX/4000 OC-192/192c Packet over SONET (POS) and Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) modules to CIENA Corp., a global leader in intelligent optical networking systems. VSR is a ratified OIF specification that provides a low-cost parallel fiber alternative to today's expensive serial interface technologies for 10 Gbps interfaces. The specification uses SONET framing and is expected to be deployed in Intelligent Optical Switches, IP Routers, Dense Wave Division Multiplexer (DWDM) systems, and SONET/ SDH Add-Drop Multiplexers (ADMs) and optical cross connects (OXCs) collocated in the central office (CO) or points-of-presence (POPs). The VSR-1 implementation is intended for connections of 300 meters or less. "The Spirent VSR interface for its Adtech AX/4000 test system will help service providers accelerate the introduction of this cost cutting technology into their intelligent optical networks by providing an independent test set to validate conformance to the VSR specification," said Dan Klausmeier, chief technology officer at CIENA's Core Switching Division. "This test set has helped CIENA to validate our VSR implementations across our metro and core intelligent optical products and enables our manufacturing facilities to ensure the quality of VSR interfaces delivered to our customers."
