PITTSBURGH -- While data can travel at the speed of light across thin optical fibers, physical and financial bottlenecks exist that prevent today's optical networks from operating at maximum efficiency. Legacy switches and routers are not scalable, and the cost of increasing speed and capacity are too high. Switched services for the wavelength core are the solution to these bottlenecks. Dr. Alberto Leon-Garcia, AcceLight Networks' chief technology officer and co-founder, will discuss this daunting challenge - and how telecommunications equipment developers are taking advantage of exciting new advances in optical networking to help carriers overcome this challenge. Dr. Leon-Garcia's presentation will take place at the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) in Baltimore, MD, on July 12 at 8:00 a.m. "The economic and technological changes that have taken place in our industry recently are forcing carriers to rethink the way they approach network planning and management, and developments such as G-MPLS and other foundational technologies are ushering in a new era for telecommunications," said Dr. Leon-Garcia. "With these new intelligent optical technologies, carriers will no longer be forced to try and cobble together 'next generation' networks with legacy equipment, but can build upon their infrastructure investments with advanced systems that are capable of taking them into the future."
